"Chances are, they didn't tell you much about Bordertown in school - humans like facts and what we can't explain, we either fight or dismiss. That's what happened when Faerie came back, appearing one day like an acid-head's dream on the hills surrounding a perfectly ordinary, modern city. First we fought it, but that didn't work, so then we isolated and ignored it. The city was abandoned and then repopulated as a frontier town between our worlds with one, long Border Wall in between. They say the Border has cornerstones from the Berlin Wall and The Great Wall of China...but don't believe everything you hear in this town, or half of what you see." (Terri Windling, "The Essential Bordertown")
Welcome to the Border. This is the last stop on the rode to Faerie where magic and technology bleed together (and work only sporadically). You've never seen prejudice until you've lived among humans and elves. There are people here who will jump you for the shape of your ears, the color of your skin, or the clothes you wear. Then there are those special people who would give you the shirt off their back. Only a crazy person would live in the Border - but we never have a shortage, and we love us some crazies.
