`{ welcome to the
When in the world did the carnival start? Who in the world thought of such a concept? Does anyone truly know? No. All we know is that carnivals have been enrapturing their audiences for hundreds of years. And this carnival is no different.
Twenty years ago, in 1870, a carnival was started by Jack Diamond. It was called, simply, Carnival. It started out as just a small collection of freaks and trapeze artists. The performers were exceptional and Carnival became popular throughout the USA. Soon, Carnival grew. It took on a menagerie, games, more freaks, and new acts. Soon, a whole train was needed to cart the carnival around the country. When Carnival was stopped at a city to set up for a performance, people from all over that state would flock to Carnival to see the show, ride the rides, play the games, and eat the food. Everyone soon knew Carnival. It was known to be a magical and happy place; people anxiously awaited for when Carnival would arive in their city or state.
But most people don't know what goes on behind the scenes. Carnival life is tough. If you're a freak, you've been made fun of and rejected for your whole entire life. Oftentimes, the carnival is your last resort for a way to make money and be something in life. If you're a performer, you work hard 24/7 perfecting your act. Nothing but the best is expected from you. If you have some miscellaneous job like running the hot dog stand, your job is boring and long. For any of these people, travelling with Carnival is hard, but also rewarding. All the employees of the carnival are a close-knit family. Sure, there are aliances and cliques and disputes, just like in every family; but, for most of the members, this is the only family they've ever had. Most of the employees who travel and live with the carnival, have been outcasts most of their lives. Carnival is a place of refuge. Most of the members are young people with no other place to go, who just happen to have some skill useful to a traveling carnival. But keep in mind, with every good carnival comes an equal share of scandal.
When one thinks of a traveling carnival, one thinks of scandal. Carnivals have always had a reputation for 'loose women' and promotion of scandelous affairs. These things are all true. Not all members of a carnival are 'dirty', but many take part in morally bad things. But that's to be expected of a carnival. And besides, no one gets seriously hurt. Usually.
So it's been twenty years now since Carnival began. It's still just as popular and as anticipated as ever. Jack Diamond's son, Jack Jr. (or Jax, as he's come to be called), has turned 21 and is the new ringmaster. He owns the whole Carnival and decides how it will be run. Jack Diamond Sr. was known to be a harsh, strict, and sometimes cruel master. Will Jax end up the same way?
